New Server

Posted on Wednesday, April 26th, 2006

We are going to be getting a new server soon, which is awesome. It is just a normal computer, but we are going to put Fedora Core 5 on it and run Apache, FTP, sendmail etc. on it. I am going to install a window manager, but I will use that only for setting it up in the first place. After the server is up and running, I will be able to use samba shared folders, FTP and SSH to add files and configure the server.

While I am transferring the files on to the server, I will have to put up a notice on all my pages, informing people that the website is unavailable. This will only be for a few hours, or days at most. If you encounter this, just come back later.

We will get better uptime with a new dedicated server, and it will be more reliable, as it will be running Linux. We will have to wait until we get ADSL 2+ to eliminate the dynamac IP address issues.

RSS Error fixed

Posted on Sunday, April 9th, 2006

I was notified by Daniel Saunders that the RSS feed of this blog was not generating proper URLS to my blog posts. I found that this was because I hadn’t set the absolute URI for the blog. The reason that this wasn’t set is that the blog was set up before I used the hosts file to access the pages on my server, and if I set the URI to blog.stephengentle.com, then I couldn’t see the CSS or images and things.
