Another new blog theme

Posted on Friday, May 26th, 2006

I haven’t posted in a while, so this post is going to be big…

I have made my own blog theme which fits into my main site now! It looks really good, except for the comments. I still haven’t written any CSS for them yet, so they look really bad. I have decided now to make the registration for the blog only, and not for my main site. This is because it would be confusing now that the sites look the same. So if you want to comment on the site news, just use the guest posting thing. It’s unfortunate that I wont be able to use the register and user viewer on my site, because they were really cool. If I could work out how to encrypt and decrypt passwords so WordPress could use them, I could have an all-round site login (not forums though…), which would be great. But I am doing two other sites that can use the register page, so that’s OK. If you want to see it, you can try it out, but you wont be able to register. I’ll just use the login to get to the admin panel.

I also made my blog have search engine optimised links, which I didn’t know it could do! I thought that I was going to have to do it manually… The links are better now, but I would like to see if I can separate words with underscores, not dashes.

I recently got Gmail for my domain, so now if anyone wants to email me, they can at stephen@stephengentle.com.

Now for some random things that have been happening recently:

  • My sister got a red Siamese fighting fish. We keep hers and mine in different tanks so they don’t fight to the death.
  • Half-Life 2: Episode One is coming out on thursday. I have downloaded it, but I will need to pay for it soon so it will be unlocked on the release date.
  • Last week we had the musical at school, which was a theatre restarunt. It was really good. I did tech team stuff for it
  • There’s only four more weeks of school left, but we have a couple of assignments and exam block to get through before that…

Thats all for today,

Firefox 2.0

I saw a review of the first alpha version of Firefox 2.0, and it looks great! It includes the only thing that I liked about Internet Explorer 7, which is the RSS viewer. It also has a cleaned up interface, and many other features like suggestions in the search box.

You can see the review here.

Server troubles

Posted on Friday, May 5th, 2006

Well, we couldn’t move to our linux server, because it is broken…. I tried to install Fedora Core 5 on it, but I ran into numerous problems. For example, the stupid computer usually hangs at different stages of the BIOS, like “Verifying DMI Pool Data…” and “Updating ESCD…”. When it does boot into FC5, I can’t access the network card. Probably something to do with those PCI bus errors that I get at startup. I wish we could just buy a Dell server or something. Scabbing old, used PCs of people rarely seems to work. It gave the previous owner a lot of trouble (it was a really cheap machine), and when I got it, the video card was broken. I guess I will just salvage any good parts, and throw the computer away. So it looks like we’ll be on this windows box for a while longer.

Anyone got any PCs they don’t need anymore?
