Canon XL-H1

Posted on Wednesday, September 20th, 2006

Canon H1Canon recently released the XL-H1, one of it’s first HDV camcorders, in Australia. It’s not cheap ($13, 999), but it is really worth it. It features a HD SDI port, timecode in and out, a GenLock generator, and many other features. The SDI port lets you bypass the HDV encoding, so you can capture uncompressed HD video in the 4:2:2 colour space. This would be a lot better than other HDV camcorders which only let you record MPEG 2 compressed video with in 4:2:0.

It really is a great camera, and even though it is very expensive, it’s professional features justify the price completely. I would definitely buy one if I had the money.

Rock Climbing

Posted on Saturday, September 16th, 2006

I went rock climbing at Urban Climb today with Kutz, Scott, Mel, Peter, Phil and Grant. It was awesome. I climbed a bunch of walls and did a lot of bouldering. I had never been to this place, and it was really good. The walls were made of some kind of plastic, and were shaped more like rock than the wooden walls at Rocksports and The Edge in Sydney.

Andrew bought a domain name today (andrewgentle.com), and you might be able to see it. It currently has a parked page, but I haven’t checked it for a few hours. His site has been under development for quite a while now, and it is pretty good. Melita also has a site there, called Melita, Ink.

Riverfire

Posted on Sunday, September 3rd, 2006

We went to Riverfire last night, and it was pretty awesome. There were about half an hour of fireworks, and the two F-111s flew over us while doing a dump and burn twice! The sound of them flying overhead was incredible… It was deafening, and we could feel the heat from the burning fuel. They were flying very low, and had to be only 30 to 80 meters above us… The fireworks were cool too, and I got a couple of good photos; I’ll put them in the photo gallery later.
