I just upgraded my computer from openSUSE 10.1 to Ubuntu 7.04. I chose to go to Ubuntu instead of upgrading SuSE because I have grown to hate YaST (It’s incredibly slow on this computer), and Ubuntu’s configuration tools are so much better. I’d never been able to get SuSE to update any of my packages, or even to play mp3s. In Ubuntu, this did not take very long to setup at all.

Now that I can play music on my computer, I am streaming my iTunes library downstairs to my computer. I had to buy some new speakers, because my current ones weren’t great. I got some really good Logitech speakers for $40 (down from $70) which sound great.

The only problem that I have now is my wireless card. Ubuntu comes with a driver for my chipset, but it is limited to WEP encryption. So instead of this, I am trying to use NDISwrapper instead (it was working great in SuSE). I just can’t work out how to change it’s driver from rt2500 to nidiswrapper…

I went rock climbing at Urban Climb today with Kutz, Scott, Mel, Peter, Phil and Grant. It was awesome. I climbed a bunch of walls and did a lot of bouldering. I had never been to this place, and it was really good. The walls were made of some kind of plastic, and were shaped more like rock than the wooden walls at Rocksports and The Edge in Sydney.

Andrew bought a domain name today (andrewgentle.com), and you might be able to see it. It currently has a parked page, but I haven’t checked it for a few hours. His site has been under development for quite a while now, and it is pretty good. Melita also has a site there, called Melita, Ink.

I have been downloading a lot of stuff this month (namely Windows Vista, Suse Linux 10 x86 and x86_64 versions) and also playing Counter-Strike: Source a lot, and as a result of this, our broadband has been slowed 64k. I can’t beleive that I actually used to surf the internet at this speed for so long… If this page is slow, it’s probably because I am using Bittorrent. I am finishing downloading Suse for my computer. The remaining 1.5 GBs should take another 6 days at this speed. I’m glad that our billing period starts on Monday, so we will be full speed again then.

I’ve been playing around with an old Ubuntu live CD that I had lying around. I like KDE better than Gnome, but with a better GTK+ theme, icon set, GDM theme, and splash screen I found at the Gnome Art page, I actually like the look beter. I still prefer Knoquerer over Nautilis but apart from that, Gnome is fine. I will probably install both, just in case.

We will be getting ADSL 2+ on the 26th, which sucks, because I thought it would be activated on the 10th. The speed of my web pages should be greatly improved then!

I just bought HL2 Episode 1! Steam is decrypting the game files as I post this. I can’t wait to play it. I am a bit annoyed that I had to pay an extra $10 for it, because I couldn’t buy it online, as I don’t have a credit card and my parents wouldn’t buy it for me, but it is much better than not owning it at all. And I also get a cool box!

I’ll post again after I’ve played a bit.

-Stephen

Update!

I have now played up to the third chapter (out of 5), and it is really good. The graphics are excellent, and there have been some great puzzles so far. It’s really great to have new challenges after playing Half-Life 2 so many times. It crashed on me a few times, but I downloaded an updated video driver, and now it works fine. I would play it all the way through in one sitting, but I want it to last at least a few days. Episode 2 isn’t coming out for 6 months!
Check out the screenshots here!

I haven’t posted in a while, so this post is going to be big…

I have made my own blog theme which fits into my main site now! It looks really good, except for the comments. I still haven’t written any CSS for them yet, so they look really bad. I have decided now to make the registration for the blog only, and not for my main site. This is because it would be confusing now that the sites look the same. So if you want to comment on the site news, just use the guest posting thing. It’s unfortunate that I wont be able to use the register and user viewer on my site, because they were really cool. If I could work out how to encrypt and decrypt passwords so WordPress could use them, I could have an all-round site login (not forums though…), which would be great. But I am doing two other sites that can use the register page, so that’s OK. If you want to see it, you can try it out, but you wont be able to register. I’ll just use the login to get to the admin panel.

I also made my blog have search engine optimised links, which I didn’t know it could do! I thought that I was going to have to do it manually… The links are better now, but I would like to see if I can separate words with underscores, not dashes.

I recently got Gmail for my domain, so now if anyone wants to email me, they can at stephen@stephengentle.com.

Now for some random things that have been happening recently:

My sister got a red Siamese fighting fish. We keep hers and mine in different tanks so they don’t fight to the death.

Half-Life 2: Episode One is coming out on thursday. I have downloaded it, but I will need to pay for it soon so it will be unlocked on the release date.

Last week we had the musical at school, which was a theatre restarunt. It was really good. I did tech team stuff for it

There’s only four more weeks of school left, but we have a couple of assignments and exam block to get through before that…

Thats all for today,

-Stephen

I have been working on SoS a lot in the past few days. The kernel now has IRQ and exception handling, and a memory allocator. The only thing that uses can do is type in text, but you will be able to type in commands when I (hopefully) release the next version in a few days. I am going to try to implement paging next, and then try a simple form of multitasking.

I bought a Siamese fighting fish on Saturday. Its blue, with a black head. It eats very expensive blood worms and blows bubbles….

That sounds so retarded… But its true.
